Joohee Yoon [2011, Illustration]

I am an illustrator and designer currently based in Providence, doing a term appointment in the illustration department. My freelance work spans a wide range of projects, including figuring out visual solutions for editorial and advertising commissions, creating picture books, and designing posters, packaging and other goods. Clients include The New York Times, The New Yorker, Le Monde, Mailchimp, and Warby Parker among many others. Much of my work is filled with bold colors and shapes, inspired by my experience with traditional handmade printmaking techniques, which I studied while doing my BFA in illustration at RISD. In 2015 my first picture book, a contemporary take on the James Thurber classic The Tiger Who Would Be King, was named one of The New York Times 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books. More recently in 2020, the Dutch edition of my book Supposing? was awarded the Zilveren Penseel award, the annual children’s literature prize for the best illustrated books published in the Netherlands. The English edition of this book is scheduled to publish in May.
