Rachel Paxton [1981, Textiles]
Inspired by mid-century atomic design icons which have been reshaped and re-imagined, these process driven paintings become balancing act between precise aesthetic decision and a purely intuitive process. Transparency and opacity, gravity and weightlessness, fade and glow are formal contradictions that reside side by side to create these strangely familiar yet unique paintings. They reveal unresolved tensions between abstraction, decoration and landscape, referring to the 1950’s and 60’s while being timeless.
