Mila Hermanovski [1991, Apparel Design]

As a graduate of the Apparel Design program (91) and having had an eponymous line of clothing, there has always been an element of modernism to my brand and aesthetic. Over 15 years ago, I started collecting pre-owned/vintage cashmere sweaters with the idea to create modern patchwork items by repurposing the knits, creating my own textiles. I decided recently to move away from apparel and make pillows because I enjoy creating these compositions, as if each one is a painting or collage; I also enjoy the challenge of using the pre-exisiting colors. Now more than ever it’s so important to upcycle anything we can. I’m enjoying creating items which add beauty and luxury to the home while repurposing all the vintage treasures I’ve found. You never know what the history is in all the garments used to make each pillow. There could be a piece of Armani, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, vintage Pringle of Scotland, or one of many more in each design, making them all one of a kind.
