Mizuki Hanada [2023, Graphic Design]

Studio J5 is a jewelry-making studio operated by myself, Mizuki Hanada, and my mother, Miki Hanada. My mother decided to start her journey in jewelry making after she retired her job as a teacher during the pandemic due to health issues, and I decided to join this journey with her while I was attending RISD. All the jewelry is handmade in our small living room at home in the suburbs of Maryland, using locally sourced materials, each piece with a specific theme in mind. Inspiration for the pieces mainly comes from vintage jewelry with a mix of Japanese craft and weaving techniques. Our hope for this business is to create work collaboratively with other smaller artists, especially those present in our local Japanese community, and use materials sourced mainly from Japanese local glass beads and pearl producers, aiming for ethical consumption and production practices.
