Jonathan Dinetz [2024, Furniture Design]

Cranston Propulsion Laboratories (CPL) is a collaborative project, started by RISD alumni Jonathan Dinetz (BFA FD 24) and Hank Hurst (BFA SCULPT 24), based out of their studio in Cranston, RI. The group’s work focuses on interrogating the absurdities of contemporary American life by rigorously investigating the ideologies informing their being, and reproducing them on their own terms. CPL’s extrusion candle series, presented for RISD craft, emulates T-slot Aluminum extrusion rails, a modular system of framing prevalent in environments such as precision manufacturing and data farms. The candles present these profiles in organic beeswax, denying both their utility and method of production, in favor of a reverence towards the extrusion’s omnipresence in the architecture of contemporary life.
