Julia Samuels [MFA 2015, Printmaking]

Julia Samuels is a printmaker presenting a variety of prints across multiple techniques. She has an extensive portfolio of landscapes produced in relief printmaking (woodcut and linocut) and this work focuses on a manmade influence on the natural environment. Her linocuts of Providence neighborhoods showcase the history and growth of the city through its complicated webs of transmission lines. Julia’s more recent work in intaglio (copperplate etching) investigates printmaking’s expansive ability to portray colors, maximizing efficiency of each plate used. Her color grid prints have minimalist and modern style mixed with strict mathematical mapping of potential permutations. Within any printmaking technique Julia’s work pushes the capability of the medium to the limits.
