Matthew Finger [1991, Illustration]

Matthew Finger is an artist and illustrator working in Pawtucket, RI. He graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991. His body of abstract work (begun in 2015) explores color and texture through a variety of repeated geometric shapes. The work is created using layers of painted collaged paper and board, various mediums and poured resin. The elements in these ‘assembled paintings’ as he calls them are created, then inlayed in a puzzle-like technique and layered in resin giving them glassy tile-like feel. Repeating various forms allows him to experiment with variations of color and texture within that form. Often the pieces work well in small series or even grids with the various colors and textures juxtaposing one another. Matthew finds inspiration in the world around him from worn architectural fragments, antique signage, nautical elements and even the labels of discarded candy wrappers. Textures and patterns found in nature often inspire him as well.
