Julia Inés Ambros [2025, Ceramics / MA 2026, Art + Design Education]

Julia Inés Ambros is a ceramic artist creating illustrated porcelain jewelry and hand-built pottery. Julia tries her best to make each piece of jewelry unique, treating the surfaces of her pendants more like an evolving drawing practice rather than a series of repeated designs. Taking inspiration from miniature painting traditions and medieval illustration, she hand-paints each individual piece with a tiny brush and ceramic underglazes.

In her pottery, Julia uses a hand-building technique called pinching and coiling. With this technique, she begins with a single ball of clay and gradually pinches her way up and along the form. The repeated motion of her fingertips creates a dappled surface, and lends itself to bulbous and quirky forms. Julia decorates her pots with textile-like patterns using brightly colored glazes, curly textures with piped-on clay, and hand-painted illustrations.
