Mackenzie Reid [2023, Illustration]

Mackenzie Reid is a multidisciplinary illustrator who has spent a lifetime obsessed with breaking open tiny mechanisms to see what makes their cogs turn. From that fascination she has fabricated troubadours, noisemakers, and jitterbugs, first pursued as a reclamation of her upbringing as a young musician, then as a bid to the ego- a sort of Victor Frankenstein to his creation, to see what I could logistically fit together and function as a system. Today, she is concerned with whimsy, and examining the transposition between 2d and 3d work as it relates to tangibility, ephemerality, and familial bonds. In consideration of the central themes of her practice, her most recent body of work is entitled Notturno, which combines her love for classical music and the bevelled plastic edge of electronic children’s toys. Notturno tells the story of Naima and Celeste, a begrudging pair, who explore a conservatory bewitched by a Nocturne. Celeste, an austere and isolated spirit, is a sister-like companion to the young violist Naima, whose fierce independence draws her deep into the conservatory walls in search of its heart- the Proscenium- against Celeste’s warnings.
