Scott Lerner [MFA 2022, Painting]

Scott Lerner’s ceramics have playful forms that echo unglamorous bodily gestures like slouching, hunching, and wobbling, imbuing them with an awkward vitality. Each piece is glazed in several layers, resulting in intricate geological surfaces that demand a closer look. There is minimal pre-planning, with Lerner preferring to improvise and make decisions on the fly. Paraphrasing Robert Frost, Lerner says “If there’s no surprise for the artist, there’s no surprise for the viewer.” The end result of this process is pieces that are often unruly and bursting beyond the conventional forms of traditional pottery.
