Alisen Herman [1990, Graphic Design]

Using the elements from the Earth, Alisen infuses her own energy with each pinch, coil or pull on the clay. She reaches back to her RISD education in graphic design to influence form, function and surface decoration. Earth’s elements continue to play a role in Alisen’s work through atmospheric firings using salt, soda, and wood, in high temperature gas kilns. These result in luscious iridescent surfaces kissed with textures similar to citrus, colors of copper, gold and bronze, topped with hand painted drawings of renewal. Each piece from Alisen’s cohesive body of work is a unique, one of a kind work of art that is both functional and beautiful. Alisen is also a teacher, professor and mentor, sharing her energy and clay making expertise with her students in grammar school through retirees.
