Ana Popescu [MFA 2025, Ceramics]

Studio A.Pop makes sculptural ceramics that blur the line between art and function, inviting everyday use with a sense of play and curiosity. The work balances refinement and rawness, transforming decorative language into objects meant to be touched, used, and lived with. Each piece carries the energy and tactility of its making, where surface, form, and material curiosity meet in quiet conversation.

Studio A.Pop is the latest evolution of a creative practice that began over a decade ago, producing immersive art and music events in New York City’s underground scene. Those projects blurred boundaries between installation, performance, and community, building spaces for connection and play. After years in large-scale production and the completion of an MFA in Ceramics at RISD, the practice shifted toward sculpture and object-making, carrying that same experimental spirit into handmade ceramic work for everyday life.

Each piece begins with clay, worked through handbuilding, casting, and glaze experimentation to reinterpret historical motifs and ornamental forms. Baroque-inspired shapes, pattern fragments, and layered surfaces become vessels and sculptures that feel simultaneously ancient and contemporary, carrying traces of memory, identity, and time while celebrating imperfection and the human hand. Studio A.Pop’s unmistakable identity comes from its love of ornament and its playful reimagining of tradition: every form feels intentional yet spontaneous, conceptually rigorous yet open. The result is a body of work that bridges the emotional resonance of sculpture with the intimate pleasure of daily use.
