Vivian Neumann [1990, Textiles]
Born in NYC, to El Salvadoran parents and raised in Austria, I was exposed to several cultures and aesthetics from a very early age. I have fond memories of spending afternoons with my mother on the veranda of our old house in Ober St.Veit surrounded by nature on the outskirts of Vienna. She would sit at her sewing machine working on a project for the home and I would sit next to her doing small tasks or ‘oficios’ that she would assign to me, learning how to sew, mend, embroider, darn and crochet. At the Age of 19 I left my home and the beautiful city of Vienna to attend the Rhode Island School of Design. After the obligatory freshman foundation I did a year and a half of Architecture, only to make a sudden switch into the Textile department after taking a six week weaving class between semesters. I was hooked, the beautiful movement of the loom, the warmth of the fibers and the explosion of colorful yarns were too much to resist. I found myself at home in the world of yarn, knitting, weaving and fabric printing. Today the same industrious and creative spirit I learned as a child and at RISD lives in me to produce and grow Shibori Baby. I hand embroider each bib, hand knit each little mitten and sew every blanket with dedication from my studio in Providence RI. I carefully pair vibrant fabrics with exceptional yarn to create the perfect gift for ages infant to toddler. I use 100% natural cotton for the quilts and 100% of the softest wool and cotton yarn for the knit products. My greatest wish is for each baby quilt that goes out into the world to become part of a family’s life and story. And that over time the quilt will become softer providing comfort and warmth to a little someone.
