Betsey Williamson [2007, Apparel Design]
The heart of my work is driven by the idea of mastering time honored skills and techniques which can then be used to create pieces designed for modern lifestyles. Leather is my medium of choice as it has beautiful organic properties that can be both consistent and yet unexpected. All of my designs begin as rough original sketches which are then translated into paper drafted patterns that are then used to create mockups and prototypes before being finally constructed into the finished pieces. My current focus is on hand cut and wet sculpted leather air plant vessels shaped into various animals. I also create small handbags and accessories such as clutches and wallets. For these styles, I enjoy playing with a mix of traditional hand stitching techniques as well as sewing on an industrial leather sewing machine.
