Dora Chen [MFA 2023, Ceramics]

Dora Chen will present a selection of ceramic works that translate her research-driven studio practice into functional objects and sculptural forms. This marks her first participation in a RISD Craft event since graduating, bringing together established works alongside recent material explorations.

The collection includes hand-built orchid plates that function as wall-mounted objects, or jewelry holders; porcelain teacups finished with brushed real-silver over-glaze; and orchid brooches made from high-fired porcelain.

Surface chemistry is central to Dora Chen’s practice. A signature pink tone emerges through a kiln reaction between chrome oxide (green) and tin oxide (white), a process she describes as Green + White = Pink. Although the two materials never physically touch, their proximity within the kiln allows them to influence one another, producing a pink blush reminiscent of skin, bruising, or heat. This “contact without contact” mirrors her ongoing inquiry into invisible connections between people, objects, and places.

In recent works, Dora Chen has been experimenting with colored porcelain and knotted, rope-like forms applied to vessel surfaces, drawing from binding gestures to express continuity, tension, and interconnection. Alongside functional wares, a small number of sculptural ceramic works will also be presented.
