Emily Reed [2003, Textiles]

I crochet my family’s worn out textiles into trivets, cozies, and rugs. This is a portable activity I began about seven years ago to occupy my hands while accompanying my children to their various activities. Crocheting is a quiet, meditative process that allows me to juxtapose colors and textures inspired by the world around me. It is an outlet to mentally and physically process the wonder filled and transitory nature of childhood, and to reflect on our family’s impact on the planet. My projects have slowly grown into increasingly large rugs. These designs range from 15 inches to 50 inches in diameter. The material is primarily recycled clothing and t-shirt factory byproduct yarn.
