Leslie Roeder [2002, Master of Industrial Design]

Leslie makes slip cast objects for the home. A process that includes plaster molds and clay slip; slip casting is a manufacturing process.

Leslie has spent her adult life, and teenage-hood in the world of manufacturing. She spent her teenage summers in her dad’s factory doing whatever she was assigned to do. Whether it is was operating the grommet machine or counting the inventory of different hardware types the factory had on hand.

Leslie is obsessed with manufacturing, which was why she went to fashion school and then RISD for Industrial design. One summer, years after graduating from RISD, she took a ceramics class. She learned how to use the wheel, slab cutter and coil extruder. But she soon discovered the world of plaster mold making and slip casting. A clay manufacturing process that allows ceramic artists to make multiples of the same object. Since then Leslie has been making objects and very practical items for daily use. All of the designs she makes are slip cast, she fires the greenware then glazes the bisqueware.

Leslie designs cups, soap dishes, lamp shades, flasks and much much more! Leslie has never forgotten the time she spent in her Dad’s factory, and is the reason she is a maker and designer today. Her favorite and most popular design is the Oliphant soap dish. A self draining soap dish which is sold at the RISD store. Her second favorite are the back and front pocket flasks. Glazed in primary and tertiary colors. The preferred color theme, which is repeated throughout most of Leslie’s work. Leslie makes everything herself.
