Harry Cassell [2019, Furniture Design]
My work revolves around material culture and languages, primarily how a craftsperson’s experience with one material affects their treatment of other materials. I’m interested in how diverse mediums can relate to each other and am especially focussed on moments of transition and connection points within an object. I work with metal, clay, and wood to make functional home goods. Metal pieces are made using a mixture of traditional blacksmithing and modern metal fabrication techniques, such as TIG welding. Clay pieces are often thrown on the wheel, further carved, and soda-fired. Wood pieces are whittled using a variety of hand gouges.
