mary+hoss. We as human beings evolved to love perfection and admire the perfectionism in mathematics of nature and astronomy, in the beauty of design and in functionality of a product. Our perception of perfection though has shifted toward an industrial, molded and without-any-process marks and/or “defects” quality. The idea of a process mark, defect, irregularity and as-is have been the center of our design process. We believe the imperfections are not defects. The imperfections are parts of the process and are embraced and enjoyed. If we look at life as a whole it is not perfect. It has a lot of “flaws” that we don’t see as flaws and enjoy the irregularities and differences. At mary+hoss we would like to think outside of the box and make pieces that carry the process, the fingerprints and the “flaws” with them while thoughtfully designed and crafted. We love colors and simple geometry. We thrive to make pieces that are functional and pleasing to the eye. We make every effort to be sustainable and be friendly to the environment in re-use of every by-product or waste from our studio and to fire to ^6 as there is no need to fire to ^10 if you have the right body and glaze. We craft our pieces using various techniques. We use plastic clay bodies for making our serve boards, extruded noodle bowls, vases, cups and molded bowls. We use slip and tinted slip to cast bowls and cups. We use slab roller, extruder, casting and hand building techniques for the process. Pieces are brushed and or dipped and fried in an electric kiln. Majority of pieces are designed and made by a collective effort between Maryam and Hossein and hence the name mary+hoss.
