Jesse Kaminsky [MFA 2014, Sculpture]

I am a second-generation artist who works across a wide variety of styles and fields. Growing up in the rural Arkansas Ozarks, my parents made a living selling ceramics and jewelry at crafts fairs and local galleries. This was the beginning of my journey in the arts, making small sculptures that found meaning in their use and inclusion in the functional lives of friends. After working for decades in more ephemeral artistic territory, I have felt a strong pull in recent years to return to the crafted object. At this stage in my life, it feels like a direct connection to my family and personal history, although my approach now is quite different. My ceramic cups and bowls are all thrown on the wheel and glazed using a combination of commercial and mixed glazes. My mom taught me to throw originally and I still use some of her techniques, although I have developed my own approach over the past 30 years since learning. My cups are intended to be handle-less, forming an intimate relationship when you hold it between my hand and yours. My earrings are created using a combination of silicone, polyurethane, epoxy, glass beads, and stainless steel, adapting some techniques from the nail industry and re-purposing others that I developed for much larger sculptures. Each piece of jewelry is one-of-a-kind and I try to leave lots of room for the materials to fully express themselves. I consider these to truly be sculptures at a very small scale.
