All the objects, pieces, sculptures are made by hand, by me. One-at-a-time. All designs are made through a slip casting process- a ceramic forming technique for pottery and other ceramics, especially for shapes not easily made on a wheel. The method, a liquid clay body slip is poured into plaster molds and allowed to form a layer, the cast, on the inside walls of the mold. This gives a consistent shape, and is most commonly used for commercial mass-produced pottery. I make all the plaster molds and all the original prototypes from which the molds are made. I do not make my own glazes, though. I started slip casting about 6 years ago, needing an outlet outside of my industrial design job, where I design primarily for factories in China. I design for toy companies, juvenile products, and products for swimming; life jackets and floats. Since all the products are made overseas, I found myself needing to engage in a design process that I feel more connected to, and where waste and landfill is nonexistent. I really love it. It’s quite fun. But like all ceramics, when you open the kiln, prepare to have your heart broken.
