Maia Demar [2025, Photography]
I will be selling prints, postcards, and zines of my photography work from the past year. I focus on themes of girlhood, coming of age, and nostalgia, and I use methods of in-camera manipulation to convey ideas of memory organically. Here is my work-in-progress artist statement: I was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, and am currently studying at Rhode Island School of Design. I will graduate with a BFA in Photography in the spring of 2025. My creative practice utilizes experimental methods, and often breaks the rules of some basic photographic techniques, to convey the disordered, messy, faceted, and sometimes dreamlike experiences that comprise girlhood and coming of age. I draw influence from my own life, as well as the infinitude of depictions of girlhood from the world around me, and I seek to make work that isn’t just “pretty”, but that is imbued with something from my own physical and psychological body.
