Melissa Bland [1995, Painting]

For over a decade, I have created wheel-thrown ceramics out of my Somerville-based studio in Massachusetts. Primarily, I work in dark stoneware, preferring the warmer tones and darker palette of the clay body. Surface pattern and texture are a central focus. I am particularly interested in the aggregation of individual marks or components thereof. Although often abstract, my patterns are still anchored in personal themes. Patterns inherently repeat, but I seek patterns that subvert expectation, reflecting life’s unpredictability and instability.
