The “Unseen” series are high-resolution medium format (Fuji GFX 100S) photos taken of the underside of boats lifted out of the water for repair. They have only been manipulated slightly to adjust the color, nothing more. These images encourage viewers to question their assumptions about beauty and damage – when is damage beautiful? When are our socially constructed assumptions about beauty evidence of how we’ve been damaged by our own bias and privilege? How is it that destruction gives birth to new life and change? The “Unseen” series invites viewers to discover multiple levels of personal and shared meaning in the beauty and new life that emerge from the worn. Only by looking more deeply below the surface can we discover the truths we need to grow, change and evolve.
