Polly Moss [1994, Textiles]

My work is the visual language that I use to share my love of detail. Whether I am carefully inspecting a tiny insect, or gazing upward at a monumental building, I am drawn to the small visual elements that create the whole. I make large scale drawings of small natural subjects, and illustrations of historic architecture. Most of my work is done with colored pencil, graphite, or ink on paper. By partnering with my trusted local printer, I have developed a collection of fine art prints. I have had a lifelong fascination with natural history, and I still return from walks with newly collected insects, stones, and seed pods in my pockets. I particularly enjoy the colors and patterns that I observe in the natural environment. When I began my artistic career as a textile designer, the natural world was my inspiration. Though my work is currently leaning more towards two dimensional illustration, I find that nature is still an endlessly enchanting influence for me. The interplay of color and structure of shapes has long been the focus of my work. Most often I enjoy concentrating my studies on subjects that are small, but familiar. I hope to be able to share with the viewers of my work, the amazement that I experience when I inspect objects through a microscope. I think that my recent drawings are compelling because while I strive for scientific accuracy, I am aiming to portray my subjects in a way that pays honest tribute to their beautiful natural forms.
