Ronnie Taubenfeld [1990, Jewelry + Metalsmithing]
My handcrafted works use contemporary processes to transform treasured materials I’ve discovered, like custom cut gemstones, vibrant Italian glass, shimmery mother-of-pearl and delicate porcelain into wearable designs. I offer an assortment of collections. from quietly luminous necklaces to vibrant, colorful pendants and rings to elegant earrings, allowing the wearer to express their unique beauty through jewelry that they’ll want to wear every day. Ive always loved to design. Initially pursuing an interest in Interior Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, I eventually switched to the Jewelry + Metals Department, where I had fallen in love with forging metals and creating art with fire one Wintersession. I later worked in Providence and NYC as a designer of costume jewelry and learned about casting, plating, mold making, photo-etching, stamping and other industrial production techniques. Today, I combine the two worlds that have influenced me? the precision of my metalworking background and the quick pace of the fashion world. My design inspirations come primarily from three sources: the natural world, including treasures I come across in my everyday life; the colors, shapes and possibilities of my materials; and the work of other artists, both recent and ancient, focusing on tiny details of metalwork, textiles, paintings, carvings. I take these varied influences and distill them into wearable art. Working in my Thornwood, NY studio, I use 14K gold and sterling silver to hand fabricate jewelry enhanced by bursts of color from the beauty of abalone shell, colored glass, gemstones and porcelain.
