Sally Goodman [1986, MFA Ceramics]
This body of work, a collection of small decorative pillows, are both personal and universal – incorporating imagery of nature and words that are meaningful and important to the artist. The artist finds inspiration in her surroundings, using images of plants, animals, stars, phases of the moon, and sun. These have always been a part of her visual language. The word home has also been a recurring theme in her work, as are peace, love, gratitude, hope, courage, breath, and joy – and sometimes even a few other more colorful with a bit of humor. These pillows are mantras for the beginning of the day – as you interact with them, mindfully adding them as the finishing touch upon the bed. They are reminders of what is important. They encourage mindfulness. Each pillow project begins with a specific theme and intention. The artist carefully selects fabric for each piece, gravitating to those rich in color and texture. She uses both hand embroidery and machine stitching, along with a thread-painting technique, and always adding a decorative trim as a finishing touch.
