Alice Fisk MacKenzie [2005, Graphic Design]

My ShineNotBurn Ceramic practice comes directly from the graduate teachings at RISD in Graphic Design where we were encouraged to explore a plethora of mediums and materials hands-on, then return to integrate the knowledge in the design studio. My ceramic pieces are one-of-a kind, each created from a place of curiosity where my mind and hands communicate; where texture, form, weight, moisture, and movement converge in playful and expressive climaxes. I was originally seduced by the process of wood-firing in an Anagama kiln, then subsequently drawn to clay and it’s properties—not the other way around—so firing outside for 100 hours is my first love, producing unique and surprise sheen and drips from ash in the wood or ores in the clay. Later I added a Speckled White and an Itty Bitty series to my developing organic collection. This would be my first time participating in the Risd Sale, and I have long hoped to do so.
