Susan Freda [1996, Sculpture]

Susan Freda www.susanfredastudios.com suefreda@yahoo.com I was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design where I earned my BFA and at the Massachusetts College of Art for my MFA. I have received numerous awards, notably a residency & exhibition at the de Young Museum & a Pollock Krasner Award. The experiences of light and shadow, fog, mist, and reflection inspire me. Rainbows dancing on the wall, refractions and beams of light, stars twinkling and glittering with gold light, and light bouncing on water like a million little suns. Nature, with its tangles and whorls and infinitesimal detail ; with rarely a straight line. These moments fill me with awe and drive my impulse to create work. I hope to connect with others about these moments that I believe we have all felt or seen or witnessed. For those who have not I hope that my work can connect them with this great interconnected system of nature that we are all an undeniable part of. Transparency, form, and flowing line, the play of cast shadows and light on a wall, sparkling, subtle states of being that invoke intimate, emotive responses. I imbue my pieces with an ephemeral presence and ability to catch and hold light and form. Created from hand woven wire and glass, the pieces envelope viewers in a seductive, entranced space. Their transparent and interconnected forms and jewel-like nature reference nature, fashion, and otherworldly phenomena. My work is inspired by numerous sources, some of which include: Giacometti‚ stretched and elongated figures, Judi Pfaff‚ installations and deft use of material; and the sculptures of Anish Kapoor. I explore the transient, poetic, and ephemeral experiences of our world‚ intimacy & emotion, and offers a space for their consideration.

Fun Fact: Sue once lived in a van by the beach in Santa Cruz for three weeks with two cats and an aloe plant.
