The Desert Ocean is a small, woman-owned business based in Brooklyn, New York. We are Tania Kamensky, RISD AP 00, and Constance Faulk, SAIC MFA 02. During the pandemic, people were looking for more comfortable clothing and everyone wanted to be outdoors regardless of the weather but definitely in the sunshine. We saw an opportunity to share our favorite clothing item, the Kaftan. We had already been wearing Kaftans for years and so knew the value of this forever stylish and always comfortable garment. Our original style was inspired by a friend that asked us to make her something wearable out of one of her Turkish towels and once people started asking for them the DesertOcean was born. The first collection was made exclusively of Turkish towels sourced directly from Denizli, Turkey. We are only using natural fibers and are also looking to source fabrics from around the world with the hopes of connecting with small businesses that we can support. Our newest collection will include fabrics from Africa. We are also looking to use vintage fabrics in an effort to be more sustainable.
