Tim Hallinan [Master of Landscape Architecture, 1996]
Tim Hallinan is Boston area based painter and mixed media artist with a formal education in landscape architecture and urban design. It is this background which influences his paintings and mixed media compositions. Tim is drawn to the endless geometry, structure, and sometimes lack of order of the urban environment. It is this urban geometry where his ideas begin. As a designer, Tim is often tasked with creating order where there is chaos. Tim looks at his work as a painter in much the same way. With little sense of where he’ll end up, he begins to apply and scrape away paint and paper to and from the canvas or wood board. Exploring random and unexpected compositions until a concrete idea materializes, Tim works through a number of versions of a painting towards a more cohesive finished painting. The designer to painter transition has allowed Tim to explore this idea of finding order in chaos at a more abstract level. It’s also given him the opportunity to expand upon his work as a designer as he delves into spacial compositions with more freedom. His most recent compositions have resulted in a clear architectural influence.
