Tomas Manto [2022, Painting]
Since I received my BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2022 my work has spanned several disciplines including oil, watercolor, printmaking and book arts. Through these mediums I construct narratives rich in magical realism that highlight the necessity of imagination in one’s understanding of the world. I once believed that people were shaped by their surroundings, and that they could not exceed their influences. I have since built on this understanding, because it discounted the transfiguration of input via one’s internal world. We shape reality based on our imaginings of it, and, historically and presently, imagination is the genesis of radical political thought. For me, to paint is to carve a window through which I can look into a world which is both real and imagined. The faces of my figures are often obscured to protect their privacy, and because they are mid-creation, too busy becoming for the viewer to be their priority. My practice invites viewers into my internal world while also encouraging them to explore their own
