Zackary Kamen [2009, Industrial Design]
Zack Kamen, RISD ID ’09, and Patrick McCluskey, Harvard Ph.D. in Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering, cofounded VITRI LLC to create thoughtfully designed products that reduce the use of plastics in food wares. One of their first products to market is the VITRI Cup, a 12oz Glass & Straw set.
Made from premium, synthetic-chemical-free borosilicate glass, this innovative glassware offers a pure and natural drinking experience. Its double-walled, insulating design ensures drinks stay hot or cold longer while eliminating condensation. The addition of textured touchpoints provides both style and grip, enhancing the tactile experience while establishing a distinct brand identity.
The VITRI Cup is versatile enough for all beverages—whether you’re savoring a hot cup of tea or enjoying a refreshing iced coffee. Designed for those who are sensitive to the taste that plastic introduces to drinks or concerned about harmful chemicals, VITRI’s glass cup and straw provide a clean and worry-free alternative.
Each set includes a dishwasher-safe glass straw, ideal for cold drinks but equally practical for use without it. Designed with modern living in mind, the glass is microwave safe, easy to clean, and packaged in a thoughtfully designed, plastic-free gift box.
This work reflects VITRI’s commitment to blending sustainable materials with innovative manufacturing. The design process prioritizes simplicity, utility, and beauty, all while minimizing environmental impact. Zack and Patrick’s creative process is rooted in clarity and refinement, tackling the inherent challenges of working with borosilicate glass—a material known for its durability but complex to manufacture. Through iterative development, they worked to ensure the design could be scaled for efficient manufacturing, making sustainable glassware accessible to a broader market. Although the production is responsibly manufactured in China, the design and development take place in New Hampshire, staying true to VITRI’s ethos of thoughtful craftsmanship and global collaboration.
