fishfelon is a jewelry brand that was birthed from my time in Jaipur, India through the 2023 RISD Global Wintersession travel course INDIA_SENSED: Craft and Collaboration in the Digital Age. During my time there, I worked with the local jeweler Neelum Narang to actualize select designs of mine with themes surrounding life, death, and skeletal structures. I learned the basics of soldering silver and jewelry making with the craftsman Roy Sajal for weeks. At every step of the process, we continuously problem-solved how our designs would work in real life versus the initial ideas and sketches on paper. The final pieces were a spine necklace and two skeletal hands, both made out of sterling silver with a hinge mechanism at the joints. Throughout my time there, I became very intertwined with the entire studio and Indian culture; it was more than just a course to me. Upon leaving, I promised them that I would return, and I did return in 4 months. In June 2023, I went back to Jaipur and apprenticed with Neelum and her studio. This time, we incorporated more technology with the crafts aspect to appeal to the Western market and younger audience as they had emphasized to me prior. I designed the rings on Blender, and then UCC Designs printed the CADs in Jaipur. Then refined the design after seeing the 3D printed drafts and went into production by molding and casting the designs in sterling silver. We also developed more handmade jewelry for an upcoming collection as well. fishfelon as a jewelry brand then began to take form. My undergraduate major was Apparel Design at RISD, and with that knowledge, I was bringing another perspective to jewelry making. Furthermore, I desired to understand and learn more about the intersection between jewelry making and fashion. A lot of our pieces are draped on the body during the making process to inform the end product, similar to the process of making clothing. Because of the techniques that were used, the jewelry moves with gravity in interesting ways. fishfelon has a range of jewelry from something more conventional for everyday use, like adjustable rings, to more costume/vanity pieces that will appeal to experienced collectors. The brand fishfelon brings more attention to the traditional craftsmanship of the jewelers in Jaipur, India, as well as more modern designs and visions that combine clothing and jewelry. Currently, we manufacture from Neelum Narang’s studio in Jaipur and are still in collaboration with them on future projects.
